What’s the big deal about Eclipses and retrogrades

While the Universe is always spinning and moving, transits coming and going, alignments shifting, there are certain phases the Universe goes through that simply don’t feel comfortable for us individually and sometimes universally for humans.

Some of it can be understood by looking at a natal chart. We were born under particular cosmic circumstances and that can help us understand why we are here they way we are. But depending on the healing we need which is based on our choices and life events, some cosmic alignments leave us feeling run over. The Universe is always shifting though, that energy will pass.

For the outer planets, the planets furthest from our sun, their retrograde periods can last for 6 months. When Pluto retrogrades, being the furthest planet from the Sun, it does for the longest period of time, about 6 months. We literally spend 6 months of every year tuning and returning into our shadow selves. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere is ironically happens in the Spring and Summer.

There are two times a year when multiple transits, aspects, and energies converge. Those times are called Eclipse seasons. During Eclipse season there are usually a few planets in retrograde, Super new moons, Super Full Moons, and of course the Eclipses themselves. With multiple energy flows flowing a little different than “usual”, we can easily become ungrounded, feel unwell for “no reason”, or wonder why the world suddenly seemed to go crazy.

While every month the moon affects humans and animals, the whole experience during Eclipse season is magnified and amplified for a longer period of time than the three days around any given full moon. What’s more, in that any given month that isn’t in Eclipse season, we usually get a break in the seemingly “chaotic” energy. Eclipse season doesn’t always give us a chance to catch our breath or a vacation from the crazy.

I would like to point out that the Universe isn’t really doing this “to” us. The Universe isn’t really your friend, it can’t really be personified. Instead, the Universe is best and truest mirror into where you are. When the “crazies” come knocking, we nothing has changed per say, but our awareness and consciousness has been filtered and directed by incoming astrological frequency.

Normal everyday occurrences can suddenly sound and feel discordant. Relationships with others can seem flat or out of tune. The thing to really remember is that EVERYONE is experiencing this all at the same times in their own way. It doesn’t mean your spouse will feel the same flatness in the relationship you are experiencing though. Because of their birth alignment and life karma, they may be honing in on a flatness somewhere else in their life and reacting to that.

While everyone experiences the Eclipse energy and all cosmic energy individually, there are some general truths that we can all agree with about these intense times.

1. Eclipses are times of great personal change. What feels off, flat, or not working well anymore during an Eclipse season is something we are going to be called to make some decisions about. Putting off making those decisions or taking action on what comes up during an Eclipse means that we are in resistance to some deeper truth that’s trying to come through. That resistance, while it might seem logical to avoid stirring pots or rocking boats, is going to feel like a struggle.

2. Because all emotions are a form of intuition, all emotions are actually leading us back to center. It’s resistance or pain avoidance that usually gums up the works. The more we can be aware of where we are putting some hard stops on the ideas coming through, the easier energy begins to work in your life. This doesn’t all ideas have to be acted upon, only that we have to know why something is a real no and if we are resisting a choice or acting out of our intuition that something is a real no-go for you.

3. While change can be hard and stressful, change is ultimately what is needed for a breakthrough. And most of the change that leads to breakthroughs doesn’t happen within your comfort zone or necessarily go according to all the little neat rules you’ve decided are real in life. The Universe doesn’t reward you for being good, following rules, or acting like a martyr. Your choices bring you your rewards, the Universe reflects back the energy of our choices/actions and the emotions behind why we made them.

4. Within the confluence of energies that come together in any particular eclipse, there are going to be some truths about the world and how it actually works that get highlighted in your life. Getting into alignment with those truths is vital to our experience of ease during these times, even if it means letting go of some long-held beliefs…like, say the belief “the universe cares that I am a good person” or even “the universe owes me”.

5. Getting into that kind of alignment can be one of the most healing and freeing experiences you can have. When we come into closer alignment with how the Universe is really working and operating in your lives, we understand how to be co-creators with it with more clarity and ease.
