What is the Holistic Self?
Holisim is the idea that certain things are interrelated, parts of a whole. It is commonly accepted that the self is the body, mind, and soul. In my work, I modify this idea, we are the whole of our body, mind, emotions, soul, and energy. We are all too familiar with why the body, mind, emotions, and soul are important and vitals aspects of being, so I am not going to cover that heavily. What is just only coming into the mainstream, in a real way at the time of this writing, is the concept of energy. The concept goes like this, we are energy, we are all energy, everything around us energy. I can talk your ear off about why and how everything and everyone comes down to energy, how our holistic self is all about how emotions, thoughts, body, soul, and energy intermingle, decipher, and interaction with the energy of everything and everyone else.
But I’m going to sum it up. Thousands of years ago, the Vedic people began writing about the fields of light surrounding every living thing. They called it an aura. They believed that all living things had a whole system of energy organs, called chakras and it also had a circulation systems, we more commonly known the Chinese words for the circulation system, which is meridian. Thus the aura and energy system is a living thing, part and parcel of who and what we are. The Chinese had very similar ideas and developed acupuncture and acupressure to manipulate the energy system around the body to cure and prevent disease. Today our modern medical devices, like the EKG, EEG, and so forth, measure the energy in our bodies and organs. These modern machines measure the bio-electromagnetic energy fields in our body. While the Vedic people didn’t necessarily understand the concept of energy in scientific terms, like we do today, many healers and energy practitioners can validate through their experiences working with this bio-energy that our body’s energy system does function like electromagnetic energy.
Most importantly for us to understand in this book, Electromagnetic energy, light (electromagnetic energy which radiates and is translated by our brains), and the energy of the body are:
- A form of energy, so cannot be created or destroyed, but can only change form or direction
- Always in motion
- Influenced by universal laws, like the law of attraction
Here’s what that means:
Holographic: energy contains information. Not just any information, but rather all information. Just like a hologram contains all the information about the image it contain in the 3D, energy contains 3D information about the thing to which it belongs. So our aura and energy system contains all the information about us already in it. Especially when we are speaking of the energy in the body, it’s intelligent, it signals chemicals to release, it signals cells to move around, it controls, at least in part, our growth, movement, feelings, and our continued existence in this physical form. And because it is a living system, it has some ability to remember our patterns and rhythms. Packets of energy and information can be bonded together to create systems, organs, living things, things in general, etc…
Energy cannot be created or destroyed: energy, whether it comes from our feelings, body cycles, or the food we eat can never be destroyed. It can transform, be converted into motion or action. It can be be stored away. It can get grounded out. But it cannot be destroyed, it has to go somewhere. Think about some common problems from this perspective, for instance, what happens when we try to break a bad habit (a habit here would be defined as a pattern of energy, emotions, and actions)? Even if we are not addicted to a substance or habit, we usually feel at odds when we try to break one because that habit is not being fulfilled, the energy pattern in our system is not being fulled. When breaking a haibt we are trying to stop our energy and selves from going a particular route. This does explain why it is so easy to pick up another habit when we are trying to break a bad one, we give that pattern of energy something else to do.
Energy is always in motion: Going back to some fundamental laws of physics, things are always in motion until something of equal or greater force acts upon them to stop them or redirect them, or until the stored energy has all been converted to kinetic energy (motion or action). Even if things don’t appear to be moving on our very physical level of observation, on the sub atomic level, everything is always vibrating, even if it’s vibrating so slowly we can’t really perceive it with our eyes or hands.
Universal laws, like the law of attraction, effect our body energies: I think of you, my readers, are already familiar with the law of attraction, where like things attract and are attracted to like things. The law of attraction is fairly evident in the world of energy. A positive ion can only attract positively charged ions (protons), and a positive ion will repel a negatively charged ion (electron). This is why magnets work they way they do. For our energy systems, according the the law of attraction, whatever we feel like we need our lives, we would have to find a way to change our energy, emotions, and mind to imitate the energy, mind, and emotions of who or what we want in our lives. If we don’t change, we will attract more of our original feelings, energy, etc…, based on where we are at at the time. Depending on where and how you are, that can be a good, bad, or neutral thing. But we always will want more, more improvement, more ease. Like death and taxes, it’s just about guaranteed that you and me will be wanting something more, or at least different, at some point. Therefore we will be seeking to change our perspectives, or charge, in order to attract it.
In this book I will talk a lot about care of the holistic self, and that includes everything we have just learned about energy. But most people do not yet think in terms of energy when they think about their daily lives and relationships. They don’t realize many of our most common problems can be resolved if everyone was aware of what is happening on the energetic level. That may sound like a bold statement to make, but everything is created from and run on energy, then why would be so hard to believe that understanding things from energetic perspective would give you a totally different view of the world. Before moving on and to make sure we’re all on the same page with how energy works, let’s take a real world example and examine it holistically.
Bob and Sue have been married a number of years. They have grown comfortable with each and in their daily together, but of course, there are small issues that bother both of them. In terms of energy, they have settled into a pattern and developed ways of exchanging energy that each can rely on. If Bob and Sue are open, honest, and fair in their communication to each other, their love/bond/energy pattern as a couple, can continue to grow and deepen. If they are not good communicators, things can get messy quickly. Each time we have a failure of communication, even on the level of body language, the communication experience will leave one or both of the participants feeling empty and perhaps robbed of something (trust, affection, compassion, etc..). What happens in communication, and relationships in general, is that when we have quality communication and relationships, there is an energy and emotional give-take and give-take. But when failure of communication happens that give-take, give-take between people is interrupted. When that happens our reactions can vary, we can feel rejected, we can feel threatened in some way, and we can even feel angry and want to lash out because of that feeling of emptiness for not having the energy and emotions returned in the exchange. Our reactions tend to follow patterns based on what we learned from our experiences growing and maturing in this world. We build emotional and mental defenses, so that we do not have to experience that hurt, empty feeling, so that we feel good about the way we interact with the world. But these defenses, the longer we keep them (whether healthy or not), will only grow and solidify the longer we use them in our life and interactions. We will begin to view the world through the lens of these patterns.
In the example above, I started off small and took the idea of the energy pattern out to a large time frame. Repeated failed energy exchanges will cause us such discomfort that we will seek to remedy by building emotional and mental walls, traps, if and then, types of thinking in order to avoid feeling that empty or “robbed” feeling. We do it out of survival and to avoid pain. But energetically speaking, there is a better solution, an easier way to solve this.
Part of my work with Super Secret Powers coaching is helping people tap into their core desired feelings, an idea I am integrating from Danielle LaPorte’s “Desire Map” book. Danielle views the world inside out from the way most people have some to understand it. She believes that each of should be living from the emotions or feelings that we desire most. Our decisions and choices should make us feel one or more of our core desired feelings, so that we can increase our ability to feel and receive that emotion or feeling. Energetically speaking is the best advice there is out there in the self-help and spiritual world of media. When we come to a conclusion, whether short or long term, that we need more of something good in our lives and less of something that disrupts our balance, we can begin choosing better energy, better health, a better life for ourselves, as it follows the principle of the law of attraction. The more we can shift our energy, our thoughts, our feelings back to our core desired feelings, the more that core desired feeling (or relationships and situations that lend us that feeling) will come into your life. The more access to better energy, the stronger in that energy we become. The stronger we become, the more we can radiate that energy and emotion out into the world, as well as in our personal lives.
In the example above, for Bob and Sue, I can say with certainty, that neither want to feel that emptiness, the sense of being robbed. I can say that for the most part, not just Bob and Sue, but all of us want to feel loved and accepted. In order to make things right on an energetic level, the “cure” would be for each of them to find a way to tap into their previously feelings of love and acceptance and then act from that place. From personal experience I know that no matter how dark of a hole you feel you have dug yourself, no matter how broken that learning and understanding your core desired feelings will lead you home again. I cannot guarantee it will be the same exact home you started off with, but it feel like home, it will feel like everything you wanted and more.
